PEPSI GOING GREEN?

Here’s a question for you: When is a company’s effort to make one aspect of its operations more sustainable a solid step in the right direction and when is it greenwashing? Take for instance Pepsi which will start testing 100-percent plastic free bottles in 2012.

When I first saw this, my reaction was, “Fine, but the product is so bad from the health and environmental perspectives that putting it in a plant-based bottle feels hollow to me.” On the other hand, not using a petroleum-based plastic bottle for a product that  generates $20 billion a year (PDF) in revenue is a good thing. Imagine how many plastic bottles (and oil) that is.

PepsiCo does do a lot of work on sustainability and corporate social responsibility, as does Coca-Cola. Both also do a fair amount of greenwashing and also a lot of harm just by being in business. But if people are going to drink Pepsi anyway, isn’t it better if the bottle is made from the plant waste generated by the company’s other business operations? Or is the business model of Pepsi (and other soft-drink makers) simply unsustainable and unacceptable?

Please, share your thoughts. I don’t have a good answer for this one.

As the hip-hop nation mourns the death of Nathaniel "Nate Dogg" Hale on Tuesday, the exact cause of death is still unknown, although Hale's family has noted his history of strokes. What is certain, however, is the indelible impact the singer/rapper's smooth baritone had on gangsta and G-Funk rap music.

Nate Dogg lent his vocal talents to a plethora of songs over the years, with his smooth but gangsta crooning serving as the cherry on top of many a hip-hop hit. The Long Beach, California, native collaborated with both up-and-coming acts and A-listers, including Dr. Dre, Eminem, Tupac and 50 Cent.

A number of artists who knew and worked with Nate took to Twitter to express their condolences. And few rappers worked as extensively with Nate Dogg as did Snoop Dogg. The two, along with Warren G, were once part of a group called 213 that sparked Dr. Dre's initial interest in Snoop.


"We lost a true legend n hip hop n rnb," Snoop tweeted. "One of my best friends n a brother to me since 1986 when I was a sophomore at poly high where we met." MORE INSIDE....

Just days after Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel announced the end of their four-year relationship, rumors began circulating that Mila Kunis may have been the cause of the breakup.

E! Online reported that Timberlake, 30, was very interested in Kunis, 27, and the rumored pair were seen flirting with each other.

A source told PEOPLE, however, that the story was untrue.

The source is quoted saying, "Mila had nothing to do with their breakup. In fact, no one came between them. They decided their relationship ran its course, and it was time to move on."

The source continues, "They're not in a relationship. They star in a movie called 'Friends with Benefits,' but they're just friends. That's it. They are not together."

Kunis recently split from 'Home Alone' star Macaulay Culkin, her boyfriend of eight years.

Clint Eastwood's Tsunami-Depicting 'Hereafter' Pulled from Japanese Cinemas

Clint Eastwood's 'Hereafter' has been pulled from Japanese cinemas following devastation wrought by an earthquake and tsunami last week.

The film depicts a character surviving the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that crippled Southeast Asia. Satoru Otani, a Warner Entertainment Japan Inc. official, says the tsunami scenes render the film "not appropriate" for Japanese audiences.

The film, starring Matt Damon, premiered stateside in October 2010; it debuted in Japan in February, playing on roughly 180 screens. 'Hereafter' was initially set to play through March.
